World Cup Limerick #2

You could blame it on shoddy defense
But maybe it was the terrorists’ presence.
They were the refs
Blind and deaf
Disallowing goals wrapped like presents.

Every man is an island
And every island has a story.
Some involve tigers
Others are less gory.

Some have histories
Of small people gone awry
Others describe crewmen
Turned into pigs in a sty.

The survivors are fishers
Or they stick to their squad
Or they farm veggies and hay
Even from the pebbled sod.

Then up grows London
And Mexico and Korea.
All governed by cunning men
With not one good idea.

I took my girlfriend
To a pebble beach in Spain
But she brought her vuvuzela
Put it to my ear
And gave my head some pain.
Lying together in the sun,
We have so much to gain.
It wasn’t until she punched me
That our love began to wane.
Like Switzerland, I tried to maintain
Our peace; I tried to submit to her reign.
Surely relationships are trade-offs,
But if she hits me again, I‘ll go insane.
I admit I deserved to be hit
When the wine I spilled caused a stain
But I can’t control the weather
And she beats me whenever there’s rain.

When we need saving most
How do our heroes rescue us?

Jesus had a bucket of apples
Which he multiplied and divided
Like third grade math.

Ninjas implement
More ostentatious magic
Like oil slicks or fading into the night.

Faulkner writes sentences
Readers could stand on
To unwrap our insecurities.

Eleven old men
Conspire to raise a nation
With the power of their feet.

But what about
Daily plugging the holes
Keeping the dam solid
Saving the city of our psyches
Constantly, consistently.

When I say
You mean the world
To me
I mean
I could pour you in a cup
And raise you to cheers
Or infuse you
In a curry
And enjoy
Your scent
Throughout the house.

If you were a flag,
I’d raise you everyday
And watch you wag in the wind.

I would put you
In a box
And fight off the crowds
Because your beauty
Could inspire riots.

But as it is
Today
I’ll be happy
To hold you in my arms
For a sunrise
Or sunset
Or any hour
In between.

World Cup 2010 Limerick #1

The World Cup is under way
Who do you win, do you say?
Spain will
Maybe Brazil
But my heart sticks with the USA!

The king had a parade
To celebrate his new look.
He had been so staid
His closet, a medieval nook.

He had the top tailor make haste
To update his taste.
Now he’s so cavalier
With 10 carats in his ear.

But the tailor had lied
The clothes were clear
(except the boxers, oh dear!)
Now by the king’s sanction, the tailor has died.
